I am the science teacher, Ms. Ahmed, and it is a pleasure to have you all as part of the MS 890 community. Through various learning activities and experiments, I intend to provide students with the opportunity to experience the wonders of science first hand and challenge them to excel, both academically and personally. When we all work together as a team, we can have a great time exploring the wonders of the world we live on! On this page, you will find information about assignments, upcoming quizzes or exams, review materials, and interesting science articles. I am looking forward to an exciting year in science class! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at Sahmed37@schools.nyc.gov.

Food Science: Nutrition, Technology, and Society We all want to eat healthy, but what does it really mean to have a “nutritious” meal these days? How is modern technology changing the way we eat? Join us in learning about how nutritional trends have been changing with the invention of food processing machinery. We will investigate how nutritional recommendations have changed throughout history, and how technological advancements have influenced this change. Projects include exploring the influence of the common vending machine, to 3D food printers, food packaging machinery, and more. We will also delve into how technology is increasing awareness of nutrition through social media applications, and the overall impact on the modern diet. Are technological advances changing nutritional habits for better or worse? Let’s find out!

Extra Credit: Science Articles
Homework and Assignments
Every month I will post an interesting science article on this website. If students read the article and write a reflection on it, they will receive extra credit towards the classwork grade. The reflection must be at least one paragraph and address the following questions: 1. Explain what you find interesting about this article and why. 2. How does this article relate to your life? 3. What did you learn after reading this article?
This is a great opportunity for students to hone in on their reading and writing skills, and ultimately prepare to read higher level scientific articles in high school and college!
